Freida Mango Burrito has done both.
Our July Yard Logs Dog of the Month isn’t just an energetic two-year-old Rottweiler with an unforgettable name—she’s a loyal companion, an adventure partner, a professional sock thief, and the inspiration behind an entire pet care business.
From overcoming two major knee surgeries before her second birthday to teaching her owner that dogs deserve lives filled with enrichment, adventure, and purpose, Freida’s story reminds us why we started Dog of the Month in the first place: every dog has a story worth celebrating.

A Name Almost as Big as Her Personality
Some dogs have simple names.
Freida’s… not so much.
Her owner, Kathryn, originally wanted to name her Mango, but after meeting her, another name felt even more fitting.
“Freida” means peace in German, and at that point in Kathryn’s life, peace was exactly what she was searching for.
Mango became her middle name.
Then one evening, puppy Freida wrapped herself completely inside a blanket like a little burrito.
Naturally…
“Burrito” stuck.
Kathryn jokingly added each new name during veterinary visits, never expecting anyone to take it seriously.
Instead, the veterinary staff updated her file every single time.
Somehow, Freida Mango Burrito officially became her name.
Honestly…
We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Love at First Puppy Grin
Freida joined Kathryn’s family when she was just three months old.
Earlier that year Kathryn had experienced the heartbreaking loss of her previous dog.
Like many dog owners know, it’s impossible to replace a best friend.
But sometimes another dog arrives exactly when you need them most.
The moment Kathryn saw Freida’s giant puppy grin, she knew.
This little Rottweiler was coming home.
That decision would eventually change far more than just her household—it would shape the way Kathryn understands dogs entirely.
More Than Just a Rottweiler
Rottweilers are often known for being confident, loyal, intelligent, and protective.
Freida certainly checks all of those boxes.
But she also reminds everyone that the breed has an incredibly goofy side.
She’s happiest carrying sticks twice her size.
She proudly steals socks whenever the opportunity presents itself.
She invents games no one taught her.
And she greets life with the kind of joyful smile that’s impossible not to return.
Like every great dog, Freida is proof that while breeds have tendencies, personalities are entirely their own.
A Dog Who Loves Having a Job
If you spend five minutes with Freida, one thing becomes obvious.
She likes having a purpose.
Walks aren’t simply walks.
They’re missions.
She proudly carries sticks through the woods like she’s helping clear the trail.
She walks beautifully in a heel.
She thrives during training sessions.
She knows far more than basic obedience commands.
Stay.
Drop it.
Trade.
Paw.
Get some water.
And plenty more.
Kathryn says structure makes Freida happy.
Training isn’t work to her.
It’s fun.
It’s bonding.
It’s another adventure to enjoy together.
The World’s Smartest Sock Thief
Of course…
No dog is perfect.
Freida has one weakness.
Socks.
Fresh socks.
Dirty socks.
Laundry socks.
Forgotten socks.
If it resembles footwear made from fabric…
She’s interested.
Thankfully she also knows the command “trade,” which has become an important part of daily life.
Usually the exchange involves treats.
The sock rarely survives with its dignity intact.
Paper towels rank surprisingly high on her list too.
She Even Tucks Herself Into Bed
Freida’s bedtime routine may be our favorite story.
She knows exactly when it’s time to call it a night.
If Kathryn or anyone else yawns…
Or simply says,
“I’m tired.”
Freida quietly gets up.
Walks to her crate.
Climbs inside.
Waits patiently.
No reminders.
No commands.
No convincing.
Apparently bedtime is serious business.
Stronger Than Anyone Could Have Imagined
This is where Freida’s story becomes especially inspiring.
At just 11 months old, Freida suffered a torn CCL—the canine equivalent of an ACL injury.
That meant major TPLO surgery.
Months of recovery.
Restricted activity.
Rehabilitation.
Then came heartbreaking news.
Because the injury was genetic, veterinarians warned Kathryn there was a good chance the second knee would eventually tear too.
Unfortunately…
It did.
Only ten months later.
Another surgery.
Another long recovery.
Another season spent watching instead of running.
For most young dogs, those years are filled with endless adventures.
For Freida, much of that time was spent healing.
Yet through it all…
She never stopped smiling.
Never stopped learning.
Never stopped loving life.
Never lost her puppy spirit.
That resilience is one of the biggest reasons Kathryn admires her so deeply.
Finally Ready for Adventure Again
By the end of July, Freida will finally receive clearance to return to full activity.
After everything she’s endured…
That’s worth celebrating.
The trails.
The parks.
The long walks.
The giant sticks.
They’re all waiting.
And something tells us Freida plans to make up for lost time.
The Dog Who Inspired a Business
One of the most meaningful parts of Freida’s story extends beyond her own life.
Kathryn named her pet sitting business Freida’s Adventures & More because of everything Freida has taught her.
Growing up around dogs is one thing.
Learning from one extraordinary dog is something else entirely.
Freida taught Kathryn that great dog care isn’t just about food, water, and exercise.
It’s about enrichment.
Adventure.
Mental stimulation.
Patience.
Understanding that every dog has unique needs.
That philosophy now shapes how Kathryn cares for every pet she meets.
Freida isn’t simply the mascot of the business.
She’s the reason it exists.
The Little Moments Matter Most
Some favorite memories aren’t vacations.
Or milestones.
Sometimes they’re incredibly ordinary moments.
Watching Freida run again after her first surgery.
Seeing her proudly carry an enormous stick home.
Watching her invent games with a tennis ball.
Sharing quiet cuddles at the end of the day.
Meeting boarding dogs with excitement instead of hesitation.
Those moments become the memories that last.
If Freida Could Talk…
Kathryn didn’t hesitate.
Freida would probably say:
“Throw the ball!”
Followed immediately by…
“Where are we going?”
Then…
“Can I have that sock?”
And finally…
“I got this.”
Honestly…
That sounds exactly right.

Some stories are funny.
Some are inspiring.
