June’s Dog of the Month is Hazel, a lovable Goldendoodle from Central Indiana who has spent nearly five years stealing hearts, supervising grooming appointments, collecting pup cups, and apparently smiling her way out of trouble.
Hazel belongs to Madi Jones, and from the moment we read her entry, we knew there was something special about this sweet girl. Between her unique personality, her fun story, and the obvious bond she shares with her family, Hazel was an easy choice for our June Dog of the Month.
Hazel will celebrate her fifth birthday this July. According to Madi, she’s been part of the family since the day she was born.
As it turns out, Hazel was part of an unexpected litter, and Madi’s parents allowed her to keep her. Nearly five years later, that decision has turned into a friendship full of memories, adventures, and plenty of laughs.
One of those memories is what helped Hazel stand out during this month’s contest.
When asked for a fun fact, Madi shared that Hazel actually went to college with her.
Not only was Hazel a regular companion during those years, but according to Madi, she was a perfect student.
“10/10 best student,” she joked. “She learned some of her commands there.”
It’s not every day that a dog can add higher education to her resumé.
Like many Goldendoodles, Hazel enjoys a fairly simple list of favorite things.
She loves being outside, taking naps, and making the occasional trip for a pup cup. When treats are involved, Greenies and pup cups rank at the top of her list.
Hazel also has a long list of nicknames. Depending on the day, she might answer to Moo Bear, Monkey, Monkey Moo, or one of the many variations her family has created over the years.
Of course, every dog has a personality quirk, and Hazel’s may be one of our favorites.
According to Madi, Hazel smiles when she’s in trouble.
Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows exactly what that means. Somehow, the guilty face ends up making you laugh instead of staying upset.
It’s hard to stay mad at a dog that looks happy to see you, even when they know they’ve been caught.
Hazel also plays an important role in Madi’s dog grooming business.
Currently operating in Lebanon and preparing for a move to a new home-based location in Thorntown, Madi says Hazel enjoys helping with the daily routine.
Her version of helping may not involve holding brushes or scheduling appointments, but she loves watching while other dogs are groomed and keeping an eye on everything happening around her.
That makes Hazel an honorary assistant groomer and likely a favorite coworker among visiting pups.
One thing that became clear while learning about Hazel is how much she enjoys spending time with her family.
When asked what her perfect day would look like, Madi’s answer wasn’t centered around toys or treats.
Instead, Hazel’s ideal day includes visiting her grandparents, grabbing a pup cup, and finishing things off with a well-earned nap.
Honestly, that sounds like a pretty great day.
At Yard Logs, our Dog of the Month program exists to celebrate the amazing dogs that make our communities better every day. Each month we get to hear incredible stories from local dog owners, and Hazel’s story reminded us that sometimes the best dogs are the ones who simply become part of every chapter of our lives.
From college classrooms to family visits, grooming appointments, pup cup runs, and afternoon naps, Hazel has been right there alongside her family through it all.
We’re grateful that Madi shared her story with us and allowed us to spotlight such a wonderful dog.
Congratulations to Hazel, our June Dog of the Month! 🐾💚
